Behind The Business… From Building Computers as a Teenager to Running a Global Tech Business

The Story Behind Suncoast Web Solutions

Meet Neil McNulty… Owner of Suncoast Web Solutions

Neil McNulty’s entrepreneurial story spans over two decades… and it all started with a simple insight:

“People need technology that just works… and they need someone who actually explains it to them.”

The Early Days… 1999 and the Dot-Com Frontier

Neil’s journey began in 1999 when he started offering website hosting. Before that, he was building and selling computers during high school… cutting costs by $1,000 per machine compared to local stores and still turning a profit. But he quickly realised that selling hardware had limitations… the machines lasted too long, and the work wasn’t scalable. So he pivoted. Web hosting was just emerging as the internet began to take hold in Australia. “Back then, most businesses didn’t even have websites, or know what they were” Neil explains. “The internet wasn’t what it is today. We were educating the market as we went.”

From Hosting to Building… and Back Again

By 2000, Neil was taking on custom software projects… including one that allowed a business to access critical apps via web browser from anywhere in the world. That job led to building their website, which led to word-of-mouth referrals and more clients.

Over the next few years, Neil partnered with designers and developers… building out custom platforms and storage solutions. One notable win was creating document storage software for a construction company… and licensing it out, a forward-thinking move that expanded their reach and recurring revenue.

In 2004, a new partnership helped accelerate growth. Neil focused on development and operations… while his business partner took on sales. By 2010, a business partner had moved on… and Neil along with one business partner would continue on with what would be become Suncoast Web Solutions until 2014 the last business partner moved on. From there Neil was the sole owner of Suncoast Web Solutions.

Scaling Smart… Locally and Globally

Over time, Neil expanded development operations in India… eventually becoming a director of an outsourcing company with over 25 staff, which grew to over 800 during the peak of COVID. Meanwhile, the Suncoast Web Solutions team in Australia remained lean, with strong systems and global clients from the U.S. to Latvia… but most of the business remains proudly local.

In 2022, Neil faced a personal health crisis… “I was unable to do a thing…I spent many months unable to do a thing, mostly in bed.” he shares. “But the systems we had in place kept the business running. That was the real test.”

It also prompted a shift in priorities… and a recommitment to building long-term resilience… for himself, his team, and the businesses they serve.

Strategic Growth… Acquiring VPSBlocks

As the dust settled, an opportunity came up. Rather than expanding the existing hosting side of the business from scratch to support new demand for enterprise-level hosting infrastructure, he acquired VPSBlocks, a cloud hosting company with an established base and mature systems.

“It just made sense,” Neil says. “We considered building something similar… but the time, resources, and risk were significantly higher. VPSBlocks had already done the groundwork… they had solid infrastructure, a loyal customer base, and aligned with the direction we were heading.”

The acquisition expanded his service offering overnight… while leveraging the same core systems, team culture, and commitment to uptime and support that his existing clients had come to expect. “It was about scalability… and doing it smart,” he adds. “Acquiring VPSBlocks gave us the runway we needed to grow faster… without diluting our standards or reinventing the wheel.”

His Proudest Achievement?

“Still being here,” Neil says. “This business has been running for 26 years. The industry moves fast… most don’t make it this far. That’s something I’m proud of.”

Lessons from 26 Years in Tech

When asked what lessons he’d pass on, Neil doesn’t hesitate:

  • It’s not about quick wins… “You build businesses through relationships… not transactions.”
  • Get your systems right… “If it’s not documented and repeatable, it’s not scalable.”
  • Don’t chase shortcuts… “The real payoff comes from consistency over time.”

Industry Myths and What People Get Wrong

According to Neil, one of the biggest misconceptions is that tech is complicated for the sake of being complicated. “People see websites or apps and think it’s all 1s and 0s… but really, it’s about systems and process.”

He adds: “Our job is to humanise the technology. Yes, it’s technical… but it’s just a framework. We help businesses be seen… get found… and run smoother. That’s what it’s about.”

Where Things Stand Today

Suncoast Web Solutions continues to serve a wide client base… from local Sunshine Coast businesses to national brands like Tackle World, and even global clients. The addition of VPSBlocks has strategically expanded their infrastructure capabilities… offering greater access to high performance resources often reserved for larger organisations. All of this happens while keeping operations distinct ensuring no crossover with existing clients and maintaining a strong focus on service. The Suncoast Web Solutions team spans Australia and international locations… with long-term clients across sectors including government, tourism, education, retail, and construction. While the VPSBlocks team has an all-Australian based team spanning across the country.

Looking Ahead… What Excites Neil?

“The next three years are going to be wild,” he says with a grin.

“AI is getting better… and it’s going to simplify some things while making others more complex. The real opportunity is helping businesses leverage it smartly… to work better, not harder.”
